Ir pagājis vairāk nekā 900 gadu kopš pirmās katoļu baznīcas būves Kolkā. Gadsimtiem šīs konfesijas dievnama te nav bijis, ari Latvijas brīvvalsts laikos ne.
1992–1997 gadā Kolkā veidojās Romas katoļu draudze, un radās nepieciešamība pēc sava dievnama. 1997. gada jūlijā ar Liepājas diecēzes bīskapa Ārvalda Andreja Brumana atļauju prāvesta Andreja Mediņa vadībā tika nojaukta 1935. gadā Sakas Grīņos celtā baznīca – koka guļbūve. Līdz 4. oktobrim to no jauna uzcēla Kolkā, atjaunojot logus, grīdu, jumtu un piebūvējot torni (arhitekte Marija Zēberga, būvdarbu vadītājs Viktors Sepelevs). Mainīts altāra iekārtojums, no Grīņiem saglabājies biktskrēsls.
Ā. A. Brumanis baznīcu iesvētīja Vissvētākās Jaunavas Marijas – Jūras Zvaigznes Dievmātes godam ar svētku dienu 22. augustā.
