Pirmās ziņas rakstītos avotos par par pašreizējā Bērzaunes pagasta teritoriju datētas ar 1229. gadu, kad Bērzaune izlēņota Tīzenhauzeniem. 1334. gadā dibināta draudze, 1340. gadā celta Bērzaunes pils.Latvijas Konversācijas vārdnīcā teikts, ka "baznīca celta laikam reizē ar Bērzaunes pili 1340. gadā; domā, ka tagadējā altāra telpa uzglabājusies no tiem laikiem." Diemžēl dažādos avotos atrodamie dati ir skopi un pat pretrunīgi.Bērzaunes baznīca pieder pie ordeņa laikā celto baznīcu tipa ar taisnstūra draudzes telpu un šaurāko kvadrātisku altāra apsīdu un tornīti rietumu jumtgalā.
