Baroka pili 1738. gadā pēc Kurzemes un Zemgales hercoga Ernsta Johana Bīrona vēlmes sāka celt itāliešu arhitekts Frančesko Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Pils ir valsts īpašums, tajā atrodas Latvijas Lauksaimniecības universitāte. Apmeklētājiem par pils un hercogu Ketleru un Bīronu dzimtu vēsturi stāsta Jelgavas Pils muzejs, kā arī Kurzemes un Zemgales hercogu kapenes.
