Šai nelielajai baznīcai, ar vismazāko draudzi pilsētā, ir sava vieta Kuldīgas kultūras vēsturē. Baznīca celta 1871. gadā Sanktpēterburgas arhitekta Bulavina vadībā ar bijušā kuldīdznieka – tirgotāja Ivana Smirnova materiālu atbalstu. Baznīca aicināja uz liturģiju gan nedaudzos pilsētas krievu tautības iedzīvotājus, gan Baltijas skolotāju semināra audzēkņus.
Lai arī celtne nepārsteidz ar izcilām mākslas vērtībām, skatienu piesaista kupola freskas, kā arī svētās Marijas, erceņģeļa Gabriēla un evaņģēlistu attēli ažūri kaltajos Cara vārtos.
