Mērsraga baznīcas sākumi meklējami 16.gs. 18.gs celtais dievnams izskatījies pēc palielas dzīvojamās mājas.
Pirmā Mērsraga luterāņu baznīca celta 1591. gadā. Ap 1700. gadu Engures dzelzslietuves nomnieks B. Strēms uzcēla koka baznīcu ar lubu jumtu, 1743. gadā to atjaunoja un paplašināja, uzbūvēja torni. Tagadējā koka baznīcas ēka celta 1809. gadā. Ēka pārbūvēta pilnībā 1896. gadā. Līdz 1920. gadam Mērsraga baznīca bija Engures baznīcas filiāle, dievkalpojumus noturēja Engures mācītājs. 1924. gadā tika atjaunotas ērģeles.
Ēka kapitāli restaurēta 2000.-2002.gadā.
Viena no vecākajām koka baznīcām Latvijā. Baznīcā atrodas vairāki valsts aizsargājamie kultūras pieminekļi (J. F. Sartori gleznotā altārglezna “Kristus ar bērnu” un J. Pipara glezna “Jēzus glābj slīkstošo Pēteri”, 1793.g., ērģeles, 19gs.II puse, lustra, 19.gs.beigas, u.c.).
