Pirmā katoļu baznīca Aizputē tika uzbūvēta 1254. gadā. 16. gadsimta 80. gados tā vēsturisko notikumu dēļ kļuva par luterāņu baznīcu. 1732. gadā Jelgavas draudzes prāvests J. Genners Aizputē nopirka māju, kurā katoļiem ierīkoja kapelu. Aptuveni pēc simts gadiem šī ēka draudēja sabrukt, tāpēc Vecpils prāvests Jāzeps Sandovičs 1853. gadā noslēdza līgumu ar krodzinieku Antoneviču, kas vēlāk baznīcai izrādījās neizdevīgs — baznīca krodziniekam izīrēja savu zemi uz 53 gadiem, par ko kroga saimnieks baznīcai uzbūvēja jaunu kapelu. 1935. gadā prāvests J. Dauģis atguva iepriekš uz līguma pamata izīrētos zemes gabalus un uz tiem atrodošās ēkas un sāka domāt par jauna dievnama būvniecību. Pēc Otrā Pasaules kara padomju vara baznīcas īpašumus nacionalizēja, baznīcai atstājot tikai vienu vecu koka māju, kas atradās ielas malā un nebija piemērota baznīcas ierīkošanai. 1955. gadā ar bīskapa atļauju tika nojaukta vecā koka baznīca Gudeniekos un pārvesta uz Aizputi. Ar pārvestajiem materiāliem prāvests J. Šnepsts 1956. veco ēku Kuldīgas ielā 3 pārbūvēja par baznīcu, kuru tajā pašā gadā toreizējais Liepājas diecēzes apustuliskais administrators Julijans Vaivods iesvētīja par baznīcu, veltot to Kristus Karaļa godam. Tā izrādījās vienīgā padomju varas laikos uzceltā baznīca Latvijā. 2002. gada 15. novembrī tika iesvētīts baznīcas pamatakmens un iemūrēta speciāla kapsula, kurā atradās liecība par pamatakmens iesvētīšanu, monētas, Svētā Benedikta medaljons un rožukronis. 2009. gada 18. aprīlī notika jaunās Aizputes baznīcas konsekrācija, ko veica Liepājas diecēzes bīskaps Vilhelms Lapelis kopā ar bīskapu Ārvaldi Andreju Brumani un priesteriem, veltot to Svētā Ignācija no Lojolas godam.
