Dobeles pilsētas vēsturiskais centrs

The Dobele Market Square was created in parallel with the construction of Dobele Church in 1945 as a result of which the church was granted parish and market rights. Along with the Market Square, also the streets leading away from it were constructed.

In the late 19^th century, the wealthiest landlords started replacing their old wooden houses on the Market Square with two-storey brick buildings with closed yards. They housed mainly shops, hotels, and restaurants. In the 1960’s, during the Soviet era, it underwent reconstruction which resulted in an asphalted street and a small public garden. The square was renamed ‘Soviet Square’. It was reconstructed again in 1987 by putting up a memorial ensemble for six local personalities who had participated in the Revolution of 1905. In 1991, its initial name ‘Market Square’ was restored. The reconstruction of the square in 2011 resulted in a pavement and a fountain in the form of an enormous well which is the largest well in Latvia.

The Market Square is currently a modern city centre where social events, such as city festivals, concerts, street markets, and sports activities are held. The historical centre of Dobele city is an urban monument of national significance.
