Kandavas Vecā pamatskolas ēka

The old primary school building is located at the northern end of Riebiķi Hill, which is called School Hill. It was built according to the project of the architect Friedrich Skujiņš from 1929 to 1936. The school is named after the linguist Karl Milenbach because he started school in Kandava.

From 1936 to 1945, the building housed K.Millenbach Primary School in Kandava. Kandava Secondary School was located in this building until 1978, when the new secondary school at Skolas Street 10 was completed.

The school building is included in the list of 100 protected European cultural heritage sites as an architectural monument.

Currently, the building houses the multifunctional youth initiative center “Nagla” and the workwear manufacturing company “Sakta”.

From Skola Hill there is a beautiful view of the ancient valley of Abava.

An oak bench (2020) made by the county's entrepreneur Jurģis Ābele is located on the school hill, where you can not only sit comfortably and watch the landscape, but it is also a place to capture important moments in life. The back of the bench is designed in the shape of the contour of Latvia. The best time to sit on a new bench is when the sun is rising.

Education in Kandava has a long history, as the teacher was mentioned in historical sources as early as 1511 and the parish school existed as early as the 16th century. Kandava Parish School was founded around 1850. The joint six-year primary school in Kandava was founded in 1920, when the city and the parish decided to merge their schools, but the studies continued to take place in the premises of both schools at Sabiles Street 8 and Lielā Street 9.
