Description
Stameriena Alexander Nevsky Church is integral part of architectural complex of Stameriena Manor. The need for a new church was determined by the converting of one part of Stameriena inhabitants to Orthodoxy in the 19th century (some of them hoped to get the land property from the Russian Government by this act). Sofy Potyomkin - wife of Stameriena proprietor Jahan Eduard von Wolf also was orthodox. The previous small timber church for about 250 persons because of bad building materials got used up quite soon and the foundation stone of new church was bedded on the 29th of June 1902. The building was finished together with pulling down the old structure in 1904. The new structure can space up to 700 persons and complete construction expenses have exceeded almost 35,000 roubles. The central part of the church body is decorated with the central onion-shape cupola and four smaller canopies around it. Daubed facades are lavishly decorated with rich plastering and architectonic details. After the 2nd World War the church was used as a warehouse during all Soviet period. Only in the end of the 80s of the 20th century renovation works initiated by the Culture Foundation was started. In the project was ment to create there a small concert hall, but financial difficulties have stopped implementation of these plans. Stameriena parish resumed its functions and took charge of the church in 1995.
