At Riga Rainis Secondary School, alongside general primary and secondary education programs, certain special education programs are also implemented. At the primary education level, an inclusive environment is offered for students with various learning needs. All students have access to school support staff, including a psychologist, special education teacher, speech therapist, social pedagogue, teacher assistant, and sign language interpreter.
At the secondary education level, in accordance with new education standards, students receive in-depth education in various humanities-oriented subjects, including languages, history and social sciences, culture, and arts. In the field of languages, in addition to Latvian and English, students have the opportunity to learn Latvian Sign Language. In culture and arts, with a focus on music, students explore not only academic music but also folklore, jazz, and modern technology applications in music. The school offers students the chance to expand the knowledge and skills acquired in lessons through a variety of extracurricular educational programs, projects, and activities, as well as gaining international experience through ERASMUS+ project activities.
Riga Rainis Secondary School is the only general education institution in Latvia where high school students have had the opportunity to learn Latvian Sign Language since 2018. The inclusion of the subject "Latvian Sign Language" in the high school curriculum was a logical step in further advancing inclusive education and the use of sign language in the educational process.
Riga Rainis Secondary School has accumulated extensive experience not only in educating deaf youth but also in involving them in public life both within the school and in society at large. Joint extracurricular activities and interest-based education programs are organized for both hearing and deaf students, artistic self-expression is supported, and various informal activities take place. According to regulatory documents, students with hearing impairments are provided with sign language interpreter support in every lesson.
