Jelgavas Vissvētās Dievmātes aizmigšanas baznīcu1889. gada 28. augustā iesvētīja viens no pazīstamākajiem Latvijas pareizticīgo virsganiem, arhibīskaps Arsēnijs. Tā arhitekts bija toreizējais eparhijas arhitekts V. A. Lunskis.
Tā bija pirmā „telts veida“ baznīca Kurzemes guberņā. Tā atšķiras ar noturīgumu, rūpīgu apdari, eleganci un skaistumu. Baznīcas telpiskā kompozīcija ir stingri kanoniska. Ēkas plāns ir risināts krusta veidā. Iekšējo telpu veido krusta kupola struktūra. Pateicoties nelielajam izmēram baznīcas interjers ir ļoti omulīgs.
Saglabājies sākotnējais interjers: svētbilžu siena, svētbilžu skapīši, sveču kaste. Šajā baznīcā netika pārtrauktas lūgšanas, tāpēc ieejot baznīcā, pārņem īpaša lūgšanu svētītas sakrālās telpas sajūta. Baznīca veiksmīgi pārdzīvoja visus 20. gadsimta ļaunos brīžus.
