19. gs. otrā pusē, pēc dzimtniecības atcelšanas Krievijā daudzi Vidzemes guberņas latvieši iepirka muižas zemes Latgalē, tajā skaitā Varakļānu novadā. Līdz ar to pakāpeniski šeit izveidojās diezgan liela luterāņu draudze ar kuras pūlēm ap 1879. gadu Varakļānos tiek uzcelta luterāņu baznīca ar 300 vietām. Baznīca būvēta no laukakmeņiem, kā dekoratīvs elements durvju un logu apmalēm izmantoti sarkanie ķieģeļi. Altārgleznu “Kristus Getzemanes dārzā” dāvinājis viens no pirmajiem latviešu profesionālajiem gleznotājiem, Minhenes mākslas akadēmijās audzēknis Artemijs Gruzdiņš (1825-1891). Altārgleznā attēlots Kristus Getzemanes dārzā, kur viņu šaubu brīdī garā stiprina Kunga sūtīts eņģelis.
