Baznīcas būvniecības darbi sākās 2013.gadā, 2015. gada augustā dievnamam uzlikts krusts.Iesvētīts 2016. gadā.
Līdz dievnama uzbūvēšanai un ievētīšanai Viesītes katoļu draudze uz dievkalpojumiem pulcējās vietējās luterāņu draudzes dievnamā.
Baznīcas nosaukums tika izvēlēts par godu svētajam Asīzes Franciskam un arī pašreizējam pāvestam Franciskam.
