Pils celta 1226. gadā, nopostīta vienlaikus ar baznīcu - 1577. gadā. Valsts nozīmes arheoloģijas piemineklis.
Kastelas tipa pils atrdās Āraišu ezera rietumu krasta pussalā. Pilij ir kvadrāta forma, kas orientēta pēc debesspusēm. Pili no priekšpils atdala dziļš aizsarggrāvis. Priekšpils arī nocietināta ar grāvi un valni, kas visā platumā atdala pussalu no krasta.
Pils ir pastāvējusi līdz 17. gs. sākumam. 17. gs. dokumentos tiek minētas vairs tikai pilsdrupas.
Arī tās pakāpeniski nojauktas, akmeņus izmantojot muižas, baznīcas un citu ēku celtniecībai.
