Description
14.gs sākumā ap 1320. gadu Livonijas ordeņa mestrs Gerhards fon Jocke uzcēla Ērģemes pili. Tā kalpoja kā spēcīgs cietoksnis Livonijas ordeņvalsts austrumu robežu aizsardzībai un kā Livonijas ordeņa mestra priekšpils Cēsu pilij. Pils celta no vietējiem laukakmeņiem, ķieģeļiem un kaļķu javas. Pils ārējais mūris veido regulāru četrstūri ar diviem lieliem nocietinājuma torņiem un priekšpili. Pilij apkārt bija grāvji, kas pildīti ar ūdeni. Priekšpili ar centrālo daļu saistīja paceļamais tilts. Pils gāja bojā Lielā Ziemeļu kara laikā (1700.- 1721.) pēc Omuļu jeb Hummeļu kaujas 1702. gada 5. jūlijā, kad pili uzspridzināja zviedru karavīri. Leģenda vēsta, ka zviedru karavīri pilī paslēpuši armijas kasi.
