Liepājas Svētā Nikolaja pareizticīgo Jūras katedrāle ir Karostas vizuālā un garīgā dominante, kas spilgti kontrastē ar tai blakus uzbūvētajām daudzstāvu paneļu dzīvojamām mājām.
Uzsākot katedrāles celtniecību 1901. gadā, tās pamatakmens svinīgajā iesvētīšanas ceremonijā piedalījās arī Krievijas cars Nikolajs II ar ģimeni. Baznīca projektēta un celta atbilstoši 17. gadsimta Krievijas pareizticīgo baznīcu principam – ar vienu centrālo un četriem sānu kupoliem.
Sākoties Pirmajam pasaules karam, daudzus katedrāles priekšmetus, tostarp zvanus un ikonas, izveda uz Krieviju. Palikušo izlaupīja vācu okupācijas armijas kareivji.
PSRS okupācijas armijas karaspēks pēc Otrā pasaules kara šeit iekārtoja sporta zāli, matrožu un zaldātu kinoteātri un izklaides vietu. Lai slāpētu lielisko akustiku un skatītāji labāk varētu sadzirdēt filmu skaņu, tika aizbetonēts centrālais kupols.
1991. gada septembrī militārie spēki atstāja katedrāli, un jau decembrī atgūtajā katedrālē notika pirmais dievkalpojums.
