JAPĀNAS
ŠIRMEGLE – ļoti dekoratīvs, mūžzaļš augs. Skujas tumši zaļas visu gadu,
~8-15 cm garas, izkārtotas lietussarga formā, pa 20-40 dzinumu galos.
Širmegle patiesībā nemaz nav egle, šis augs ir savas sugas vienīgais
pārstāvis, kas saglabājies no tāltāliem aizvēstures laikiem. Širmegles
senči ir pieredzējuši gan dinozauru ēru, gan pārcietuši leduslaikmetu.
Veicot Baltijas dzintara pētījumus ir konstatēts, ka dzintara veidošanās
resursu sākums ir širmegles, nevis araukārijas vai priedes, kā tas,
līdz šim ticis, uzskatīts. Lēnaudzīga. Augstums – 200 gadu laikā var
sasniegt 20 m.
