Katamarāns ir ļoti universāls braucamrīks; augstākās kategorijās - gandrīz neaizstājams. Tas sastāv no diviem, gaitas virzienā vērstiem, paralēliem baloniem, kurus savieno šķērstrubas. Baloniem drošības nolūkos parasti tiek veidotas vairākas sekcijas un/vai baloni aplīmēti ar protektoru vai veidoti divslāņu baloni - ārējais kalpo kā protektors un satur visu būšanu kopā, iekšējais (lielāks) ir gaisa necaurlaidīgs.
Parasti tiek izmantoti divvietīgi vai četrvietīgi katamarāni. Divvietīgais katamarāns var būt gan smailes, gan kanoe variantā, turklāt smailīškatamarāns (tāds, kurā braucēji sēž viens aiz otra nevis blakus) ir Latvijas ūdeņnieku prerogatīva. Citur pārsvarā izmanto kanoe katamarānus.
