Kanoe laivu vispārējās atšķirības ir:
- kanoe airē ar vienlāpstiņas - kanoe - airi (kaut gan ir iespējams izmantot arī kajaka airi);
- raksturīga ir kanoe airētāja poza - uz viena vai abiem ceļgaliem (tiesa, tūrisma kanoe parasti sēž sēdus).
Kanoe ir lieliski piemērota atpūtas braucieniem pa mierīgām upēm.
