1999.gadā Pasaules dabas fonds (WWF) pie Papes ezera ieveda 18 savvaļas zirgus. Tā bija pirmā vieta Latvijā, kur pirmo reizi šos savvaļas dzīvniekus palaida ganīties. Jau vairākus gadsimtus savvaļas zirgi un tauri kopā ar dabiskajām pļavām ir tikpat kā izzuduši no Eiropas dabas. Vēsturiski lielie zālēdāji veicināja dabisku pļavu un mozaīkveida ainavas pastāvēšanu. Mūsdienās vairākums dabisko pļavu ir pārveidotas tīrumos un zālājos, kuros sumbri, savvaļas zirgi un govis vairs nav sastopami. Tā ir cilvēka veidota kultūrainava, kurā mikroorganismu, augu un dzīvnieku sugu sastāvs ir nabadzīgs un vienveidīgs. Cilvēka lauksaimnieciskā darbība nodrošina tikai ainavas atklātumu, bet ne dabas daudzveidību tajā. Savvaļas zirgi pārtiekot no zāles, niedrēm, krūmiem, koku mizas, rada dažādu augstumu veģetāciju, veido brīvas vietas no niedrēm un krūmājiem, sekmē meža lauču veidošanos. Tādā veidā tiek veicināta dzīvesvietas veidošanās arī citām pļavu sugām.
